TMJ, TMD and TMJD refer to temporomandibular joint disorders. The temporomandibular joint is the joint located on both sides of the head, in front of the ears. This joint is where the lower jawbone is attached to the skull. The temporomandibular joint is a complex joint which has bone, ligaments and muscles attached to it. It is critical for basic functions such as eating and speaking.
When anything prevents the intricate temporomandibular joint from properly functioning, a TMJ disorder may result. TMJ disorders can be quite painful and adversely affect all the functions of the mouth. Some of the causes of TMJ disorders are: grinding of the teeth; a jaw or facial injury; the dislocation of the jaw; arthritis or a misalignment of the jaws and/or teeth.
It is possible that Doctor McFarland will detect symptoms of a TMJ disorder during your regular exams, but symptoms are not always apparent, even during a thorough oral exam – especially in the early stages of a TMJ disorder. If you experience pain, swelling or tenderness in the area of the temporomandibular joint, inform Doctor McFarland so that he can do a comprehensive exam and then discuss the treatment options with you.
